Formentera’s cultural offer has not only grown in recent years but has also increased in quality and diversity. The Consellerias of Culture and Tourism make each year a concerted effort to organize a calendar of cultural activities. The novelty is perhaps the concern for the environment.
Therefore meetings are organized such as the Posidonia Project Forum. It not only analyses this marine plant’s state of conservation, but also other global problems are addressed such as climate change, the proliferation of plastic in the Mediterranean or the garbage management. In addition, the collective ¡Qué Celeste! organizes every year a festival with street performances, circus and music related to the environment.
Between May and October the cultural program extends to practically all the towns, bringing the music of local groups of different styles to the public squares of La Savina, Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and Es Pujols. And to this we have to add the main local festivals which offer live concerts such as the Jazz Festival and the Guitar Festival, without forgetting the program of the Diada de Formentera, on July 25. As for the art exhibitions, the program manages to surprise.
The exhibition space in the Old Town Hall houses practically every week a new show of the artists linked to the island, be it a resident or someone passing through. The exhibition room of the Gabrielet Center usually shows original handicraft. El Faro de la Mola has become an interpretation center for the lighthouse itself and for the light signals, but it also has an exhibition room for contemporary art.
